The Bog Blog - Swamp Creatures thread4876

Collector Odins_Raven private msg quote post Address this user
The history of swamp creatures in comics and popular culture is legendary to say the least. As a huge ST fan myself, I thought it would be fun to start a thread about the comic book iterations of the American swamp monster, such as The Heap, Swamp Thing and Man Thing, etc.

Whether in movies, tv shows, memorabilia or the comics themselves; this thread is dedicated to discussing and displaying anything and everything related to the depictions of our favorite muck-monsters from the murky depths of pop culture.

There's a Dr. Spector Gold Key comic with one in it, but I don't know the issue number. I "think" it was a back-up story.

@X51 Interesting, do you recall the cover art by chance?

No. I don't. I just remember reading it and thinking that it was odd that Gold Key had a swamp monster story out around the same time DC and Marvel were doing the same. The cover you posted could be the character reappearing, but I don't think I've ever read that one before.

Here is a classic cover from the Atlas days. Never read it personally but I wonder if it is collected anywhere...?

This is probably not a true swamp monster, but I located it while searching through my comic scans. I don't remember the actual story.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

Get the original. LOL! Well! It might be too expensive. I got it early.

If I recall correctly, this was a swamp related story about a world underneath the water. It says quicksand, but I recall it being more of a bog or swamp.

I think this is issue #21. GCD says there was a Halloween costume of this Swamp monster in #18, so I do think he appeared earlier in a back-up story.

This one comes to mind, but I haven't read it since I was a kid.
Again, I don't think it's along the lines of Swamp Thing.

Surprised nobody has posted this yet. I personally think it looks more like Man-Thing than Swampy. I asked Neal Adams about Marvel creating Man-Thing obviously using this cover as a base. His reply: "Everybody was stealing everyone's stuff back then."

That is still really cool! Thank you for sharing. I want to emphasize that this thread can be for ANY swamp-related creature in comics besides the most popular one we all know and love

Isn't Heap considered the first (original) swamp creature in comics?

I can't find the scan of my copy but here is one of my all-time favorite swamp creature issues.

@Odins_Raven The Air Fighters issues I believe I found it on eBay about a year ago. I think the seller was asking over $500-600 for it. I never pulled the trigger. 😂

I was just looking at them on GPA and that does seem a little high for then depending on the condition. There isn't much interest in the Heap or Air Fighters/Boy comics so these days that might be a price worth considering.

That's an excellent site. I believe that's where I found that original Heap story. 👍🏻
