This pedigree has a powerhouse provenance, Edgar Church, Nick Cage...

...and now me! (lol)

And this Church copy with Craig Flessel cover is one of my favorite pedigree books...

Cheers,
Cat

I'm sure someone else here will have more experience with and will correct and elaborate on what I'm gonna say but as I understand them, a Pedigree is a large, well-known collection of high-grade books from an original owner.

There's a website with lots of info, but I think Matt Nelson (pedigree expert & head grader at CGC) has got his hands full at the moment.

@dielinfinite that pretty much nails it. There are other noteworthy designations relating to provenance that collectors also find desirable.

The first, File Copies and Pay copies. These are copies that were either retained by the publisher for their records, or sent to specific partners of the publishing firm. File copies may or may not be high grade and their value to collectors varies in significance.

The second designation on holders are prestige collections. These are high grade collections purchased by celebrities well known to the media (prominent actor, director, musician, author, etc.). These aren't always designated on labels as it's entirely up to the owner and grading service.

IMO, the primary advantage to owning a prestige collection book value-wise is the additional provenance.

There are other label designations that classify rare or unique books such as Ash-can copies, double covers, etc., each having special collector interest. While these have nothing to do with pedigrees, they fit in the general scope of this discussion.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Cat
