How badly will binder holes effect the grade2339

Collector HarRes private msg quote post Address this user
Hi all.

I have a beautiful copy of ASM #14 first appearance of Green Goblin. There is no chipping, the gloss is fantastic, and the colors are exceptional. However, it unfortunately has three holes punched on the left side of the book. It was clearly intentional, and my guess is that the previous owner filed it away in a binder for safe keeping, seeing that the rest of the comic is in such good shape.

How can a defect like this effect the grade of the book? I'm guessing that if it wasn't for the holes, it would be between and 7.0 and an 8.5

It also has a faint ink stamp on the cover that reads acquired in 1964. Could that mean anything?

Thanks,
Harrison

Binder holes are a pet peeve of mine.

That aside and without really seeing the book, I'd imagine it'd bring the book down to the 1.5-2.5 range. They're a pretty devastating flaw since they're essentially pieces missing from every single page.

I understand that, but I would rather have a 2.5 copy that looks 8.5 than a 2.5 copy that looks 2.5.

Do you really think it'll bring it down that low? The holes are rather small.

Sell the comic, keep the binder.

In my opinion the book is incomplete and should get graded .5 via CBCS just like they would do if it was missing a page. The book is incomplete missing pieces on every single page. With that said, to own that comic for your collection or as reading copy would be great. But i wouldnt try to get it graded.

You could always send it in and find out or call CBCS and ask to make certain.

It isn't incomplete, it just has holes. The rest of the comic is perfect.

Hole/s and binder hole(s) each by definition make any book incomplete. Please tell me why each of these instances is NOT incomplete.

Just my opinion. But looks like from dielinfinite's example that CBCS will be more generous on the grade. CGC would probably give it a qualified grade though.

Just consider this. If a ad or value stamp is cut out it is considered incomplete right? Would the amount of missing book from the punched holes equal roughly the same surface area of a missing ad or value stamp? I think so.

I have seen, and owned, several books with this same hole-punched problem, front and/or back cover, all of which came from the New York area.

That's interesting... I live in New York! But what does that have to do with anything?

So after seeing the pics of the Sub-Mariner comic, what do you think that grade will be?

Yikes! If that "machine-gunned" Sub-Mariner can get a 3.0, I wonder what my Fantastic Four Golden Records with one hole would get?

Would you rather have a hole punched comic or marker scribbled on cover by child?

even with all the holes punched in like that Sub Mariner? Maybe they will eventually recognize hole punches like tape and just ignore it when grading?? Lol
